As part of an effort to apply international humanitarian law to the analysis of recent and on-going conflicts, we will periodically commission new essays that will examine specific crimes and events in armed conflicts journalistically, while bringing to bear the conceptual framework of international humanitarian law.
The following essays were adapted from the book Crimes of War: What the Public Should Know (W.W. Norton, 1999).
