About CWP Monitor

Responding to the increasing worldwide focus on legal and moral issues surrounding contemporary conflicts, the Crimes of War Project has spent several months re-conceptualizing and designing our Web site to better address these concerns.

To provide our readers with the best possible coverage of warfare and the applicable humanitarian law, we have created a Crimes of War online magazine, an Experts Analysis section to provide legal interpretation, as well as an Archive of all previously published material. The site will also keep readers informed of all upcoming CWP activities. Please let us know what you think of this new site and the issues we address. You can reach us at [email protected].

The Magazine
The Magazine is a unique collaboration of leading scholars, journalists, writers, and legal experts on war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and international law as it is developing to confront these atrocities and the social and political crises they engender. Published bimonthly on the worldwide web and continually updated, The Magazine provides on-the-ground coverage and in-depth analysis of specific crisis zones and important legal and political developments. In the belief that personal testimony is essential to documenting, deciphering, and publicizing human rights disasters, The Magazine offers a venue for survivors and witnesses to tell their stories.

Each issue also features photography, art, video, and audio elements to provide more layers of documentation, texture, and nuance.

The Magazine is intended to be a source for news editors, reporters, policy makers, educators, and the general public. Our present issue focusses on the brave new world of international prosecutions: the precedents set by the UN ad hoc tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda; the innovative but imperfect model for the Special Court for Sierra Leone; and the problematic justice meted out in East Timor. CWP is also monitoring developments for the trial of Khmer Rouge criminals against humanity, projected to take place this fall in Cambodia, and will provide updates as events unfold.

Upcoming issues are devoted to Colombia, Sudan, the International Criminal Court (ICC), sex crimes, and an exploration of war crimes potentially committed by the U.S. and NATO.

Expert Analysis
For breaking stories that are especially controversial Experts' Round-Up, we assemble a group of experts for clarification, analysis, and debate. "Did Bob Kerrey Commit War Crimes?" is our latest Experts’ Round-Up; recent debates have focussed on Chechnya, The Middle East, and The Pinochet Precedent.

Archives
Here is everything published to date by Crimes of War: the entire run of The Magazine; every Expert's analysis Round-Up; articles from the Crimes of War book; all of our visuals.
