April 2002

In 2001 I received a Pew Fellowship to travel to the Nuba Mountains. Sudan receives so little coverage in the foreign press and I wanted to show the human consequences of a prolonged conflict. After so many years, the Sudanese war can seem confusing and convoluted- full of biblical images of children with bloated bellies that are difficult to relate to. The Nuba have also suffered famine and frequent attacks but their resilient culture inspires moderation and religious tolerance despite extreme adversity.
