There are two acknowledged U.S. detention facilities here, at the air base in Bagram and at Kandahar, and a number of “transient sites”. It is also alleged that the CIA maintains an interrogation facility in Kabul. The deaths of two detainees at Bagram in December 2002 were described as homicides by military pathologists. Several detainees released after being held at Kandahar have said they were beaten there. A prisoner died at a camp in Asadabad in June 2003; a CIA contractor has been charged with assault in connection with his death.
