Crimes of War: What the Public Should Know

Dari/Pashto

In May 2008, the Killid Group held a book launch in Kabul for the Dari and Pashto translation of Crimes of War, What the Public Should Know. The event was well attended by members of Afghan civil society, Afghan Government representatives (Ministries of Interior, Defense, Information and Culture), the French, Iranian and Russian Embassies as well as various national and international NGO's.

In addition to TKG's own media coverage (radio and print), the BBC's Pashto/Dari Service sent a reporter and produced the following piece about the launch: http://www.bbc.couk/persian.com.

One hundred copies of the book were distributed at the event while 250 books were distributed at the November 2007 workshop. The Killid Group will hold similar events at each of the nation's main universities so that students and teachers can have access to this unique resource. In addition, each of the 34 provincial governor’s offices will receive copies of the book as well as key ministries, including the newly established Independent Directorate of Local Governance. The book is also being distributed to other local government offices and independent media organizations.

A basic understanding of the legal principles that apply in armed conflict and that form the basis of war crimes trials is an essential tool for journalists working in these areas.  Drawing on our expertise in journalism and international law, the Crimes of War Project conducts training workshops to help journalists report on war crimes and war crimes trials more effectively.  Also, DHSA/TKG's media distribution service, NyeExpress, can assist in getting the books to the each of the provinces:
