On Wednesday October 11, Associated Press distributed this photograph of actress Angelina Jolie reading the book "Crimes of War: What the Public Should Know" while on location in India. Jolie is filming a movie with director Michael Winterbottom based on the story of the Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, who was kidnapped and killed in Pakistan in 2002.
Angelina Jolie has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees since 2001 and has visited several regions affected by conflict in recent years including Darfur, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sri Lanka, Sierra Leone and Cambodia.
The book is an introduction to laws on war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, and their application to contemporary conflicts, designed for those without specialist legal training in these areas. It was published in English in 1999 and is now available in 11 languages.
A revised and updated edition of the book, including chapters on the most significant developments since 1999, will be published early next year.
